Wu Lizhu 邬丽珠 (1910-1978.6.23). Actress. Born Dinghai, Zhejiang province. Was fond of martial arts
from childhood. Entered motion pictures in 1925 with a supporting role in the Shanghai Commercial Press Motion Picture Picture Division silent film "A Fatal Love." The director of this film was Ren Pengnian, who eventually became her husband and business partner. In 1928, Wu became one of China's first martial arts heroines when she played the lead in the 13 part serial "Northeast Hero," (1928-31) from Ren's Bright Moon studio, and directed by him. She then had the title role in the six-part serial "Mistress of the Spear," which made her one of the most popular martial arts actresses of the time. She was in two anti-Japanese films directed by Ren Pengnian, "Dark Violence" and "Vicious Neighbors." After the Japanese invasion, the couple relocated to Hong Kong, remaining there after the war to make a succession of Cantonese dialect martial arts movies. Her last screen appearance was in 1961's Three Northeast Heroines, after which she retired. Most of Wu Lizhu's films during her 36-year career were of the martial arts genre, the majority of them directed by her husband Ren Pengnian.
