Chinese sources indicate that while most of this sound remake is lost, some surviving excerpts are in the China Film Archive. From these excerpts, the film's program notes and contemporary reviews, it appears to have followed closely the plot of the original. But inclusion in the supporting cast of several comic actors indicates the remake included some comedy relief in its otherwise sad story. There were also original musical numbers, performed by singer-actress Bai Hong. Leading man Jin Yan reprised his role from the silent (although with top billing this time). Ruan Lingyu's favorite character actor Liu Jiqun, who played her father in 1931, was in this remake as well, although surviving records do not indicate his role this time.
